We are in unprecedented times in 2020 but just when I thought I knew all that was coming, Florian tells me he wants to buy an Xbox.

Socialising has had to adapt during times of isolation, with what was once dinners with friends, catch-ups over coffee, and picnics in the park has now become house party, zooms, and gaming.
I woke up on Monday morning to Florian scrolling on his phone, looking at Xbox consoles and games. After he sweetly wished me good morning, he proudly declared “I’m going to buy an Xbox.”
Whilst I don’t remember my exact reaction, I am confident to say it probably looked something like this:

First of all, I grew up playing Playstation, so my allegiance remains firmly in that camp. I stopped playing in Highschool so I have no idea if it’s common for people to jump camps, but my 16-year-old self would be rolling her eyes at the thought of an Xbox in the house.
Then there’s the whole hours of laughing and talking into the abyss whilst shooting rapid-fire bullets in an imaginary game.
Sure, this isolation has resulted in the postponement of our wedding, move overseas and I currently cannot find a job, but now an Xbox?!
Just when I thought I would be able to cope with what 2020 threw at me, I’ve lost my soon-to-be-husband to the gaming world.
I never had a brother growing up, but in my early twenties, my older cousin moved in upstairs and most of what I can remember is the TV at full volume and him laughing and talking to himself.
Don’t get me wrong, I love playing games and am a fierce contender when it comes to Mario Kart and Need for Speed but it can be so exclusive to the player.
When I asked Florian, why he wanted to buy one, he advised “I have FOMO from all my friends being online and I want to stay connected with the boys.”
One of my favourite things about Florian was that he wasn’t a gamer, rather taking entertainment from movies, walks, and being outdoors. I also remind him that he’s a great guitar player and he should use his extra time to learn some new songs.
So what does this mean for me?

Maybe I’ll start a support group for the WAGs of the gaming world and we can zoom about wine and why on earth Rory through her life away to move back to Stars Hollow.
Or MAYBE, I’ll just have to learn how to play Xbox and get a second controller.
2020 is already strange enough, this just adds a cherry on top!
