I met Eliza Blackwood after searching for a naturopath who could treat my relentless eczema.
As the principle naturopath at CBD Natural Health, she has over 15 years experience overseas and in Australia and has published articles in her field so she definitely knows what she’s talking about.
It can be really difficult to navigate through the endless posts, images and articles on what’s healthy and what’s not.
I feel like I’m constantly reading about different diets, teas or supplements to lose weight, have glowing skin and mermaid hair whilst holding a yoga pose and eating the most instagrammable acai bowl.
No two people are the same so how can there be a one-size-fits-all approach to health?
Although Eliza has given me a herb tonic that results in a full body convulsion of disgust after each sip, she’s looked at my lifestyle and tested me against foods that aren’t well received by MY body.
Turns out after a simple food screening, I need to cut out eggs, wheat, yeast and dairy for the next three months to give my body a break from fighting itself and torturing my skin with oh-so-itchy eczema.
I thought I’d use the opportunity to pick Eliza’s brain a little about the things we can do to be healthier in our day to day lives and share it with you all because you know, I’m just a great ‘gal!
WHAT IS THE SIMPLEST THING YOU CAN DO EVERY DAY TO PROMOTE BETTER HEALTH AND WELLBEING?
Creating a balance in your life is probably the most important thing. A balance between eating well, exercise, relaxation and connecting to others helps us on all levels.
To do this, we need to check in on ourselves and ask how do I feel today? What have I done for myself? What do I need?
HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOU DRINK A DAY?
2 litres of clean water is a good goal. This may increase with exercise and heat.
IF YOU’VE HAD A BIG WEEKEND WITH A LOT OF BAD WITH AND ALCOHOL, WHAT’S AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO BOUNCE BACK
Lots of water and clean eating. Healthy, fresh foods such as salads as well as nourishing, warm soups or stews.
I would treat a hangover as you would if you were sick in bed with nutrient-rich, easily digested foods (rather than giving into salty carb cravings that hangovers can cause!)
WHAT CAN A BREAK OUT IN OUR SKIN TELL US ABOUT OUR OVERALL HEALTH?
Naturopathically we see the skin a reflection of what is happening on the inside. Breakouts are reflective of the health of our digestive system, liver, and lymphatic system.
Look for symptoms in these areas and consider consulting a naturopath if you skin problems persist.
WHAT ARE SOME COMMON FADS YOU’VE HEARD THAT ARE DANGEROUS TO OUR HEALTH?
Restrictive diets can be dangerous to health in a way. Going on the latest keto diet, detox or even FODMAP diet is ok short term, but be wary of doing anything long term without consulting a health practitioner first.
Restrictive diets can lead to nutrient deficiencies, unwanted changes in our microbiome or stress on other organs or body system. Health should always be about finding Your individual and unique balance.
If you have any questions about your health or what’s right for you, be sure to reach out to Eliza.
But I can’t promise you she won’t prescribe you her herb tonic as well!
